Chapter Eighteen
I pushed open the door and stepped inside the Hornthorpe club. The warmth was welcome.
âAre you a member?â asked the man behind the desk in the foyer.
âSamantha!â
I looked across to Pete who was coming towards us. âHi Pete, this is my cousin Eamon. Heâs staying with us over Christmas, and I thought it would be nice to bring him for a drink here.â
âNo problem; you can sign in as my guests.â Pete held his hand out to Eamon. âPeter Flinders, Samanthaâs instructor.â
âEamon Kildea.â Eamon took Peteâs hand and shook.
âWhere are you from?â Pete asked when he heard Eamon speak.
âDownpatrick,â Eamon replied.
âA lovely part of the world,â Pete said. âWhen I was a boy, I had some wonderful holidays with my aunt and uncle in Ballycastle. For two pins, I would have moved there permanently, but my uncle died and my aunt came to England to be near us.â
âThereâs a lot come over here from the old country, with the troubles and all that,â Eamon said. I noticed his accent had thickened as he spoke to Pete.
âSad times. Letâs hope they donât last,â Pete said. âAnyway, here I am keeping you chatting. Letâs get you signed in and then you can enjoy the evening.â
We all signed the book. Pete went into the office, and Eamon and I went to the bar where Barbara was working.
âHello again. Merry Christmas,â Barbara said.
âMerry Christmas. This is Eamon. Heâs staying with us over the holidays.â
âWhat can I get you, Eamon?â
âPint of bitter and a lager and lime for my cousin please,â he said.
Barbara got us our drinks and we settled on a couple of bar stools that gave us a good view of the room.
âDo you know what youâre looking for, Eamon,â I whispered.
âAnything and everything.â
I pointed at the photographs on the wall. âRecognise that?â
Eamon put his drink down and went over to inspect them. âIâve seen that one before.â I went and stood beside him.
Barbara noticed us looking. âHave you shown him the one we talked about?â
âWe were just looking at it,â I replied.
A man, mid-fifties, silver hair came to the bar. âSummerskillâs last jump,â he called to us.
âThe usual, Minchie?â Barbara said.
âThe usual, Barbara,â he replied.
âMinchie, Tom Minchin,â I whispered to Eamon. âThe one Mr Donald told us about. He knows about storing the parachutes.â
This wasnât exactly what we had been looking for, but it was too good an opportunity to pass up. We returned to our drinks.
âI couldnât imagine anything more horrible,â I said.
âYou wouldnât get me jumping from a plane,â Eamon agreed.
âOh, itâs not so bad,â Minchie said. âI was nervous at first, but you get used to it.â
Barbara put a pint in front of him and he chugged half of it straight down and smacked his lips.
âYou were in the air force?â Eamon asked.
âI was a marine. Commandos trained in parachute jumping, it was necessary for some missions. We had to train with the RAF.â
âI suppose it makes sense to pool resources,â I said.
âExactly,â Minchie said. âI was here on that day.
